The place and its people

More Than a Marketplace

Located in Beruwala on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, China Fort is a longstanding centre of gemstone trading. Its Pathé gemstone market brings together merchants, brokers, cutters, polishers and buyers, with business shaped by personal relationships and generations of practical knowledge.

Experienced traders have helped others learn by sharing contacts, practical skills and opportunities. That tradition of knowledge passed between people remains an important part of the community's story.

How the market began

From Conversations Over Tea to the Pathé Market

Long before Pathé became a busy gemstone marketplace, China Fort merchants met buyers and fellow traders through personal introductions. Some welcomed visitors into their homes; others arranged to meet at tea shops and small eateries around Pathé, where they could sit together, examine gemstones, discuss prices and negotiate over refreshments.

As these meetings became more frequent, Pathé gradually became a familiar gathering point for gemstone business. The street, once lined with homes and small shops, developed into a trading area with dedicated offices, merchants and visiting buyers. What began with informal conversations grew into an internationally connected gemstone marketplace.

The Craft Behind the Trade

China Fort traders source gemstones from Sri Lankan regions and international networks. Depending on the stone, skilled craftspeople assess, cut and polish rough material, balancing weight, proportions, brilliance and finish for buyers in different markets.

Gemological Expertise in China Fort

China Fort has multiple gemological laboratories where gemstones can be examined using specialized instruments, including gemological microscopes. Qualified gemologists assess characteristics such as identity and, where the testing allows, indications of treatments.

The market includes professionals trained by internationally recognized gemological education bodies. The pictured laboratory equipment was photographed in a local gemological laboratory with a gemologist qualified through the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A).

Buyers can arrange independent laboratory reports when appropriate. Qualifications and laboratory services should be checked individually; a gemologist's qualification does not imply institutional endorsement of a laboratory.
