The Roots of Our Story
The Legacy of A.W.M.T Nizam.
Our family's journey in Sri Lanka's gemstone trade spans nearly four generations. Our late maternal grandfather, A.W.M.T Nizam, learned the trade from his father and travelled from China Fort to Ratnapura, where he purchased rough gemstones from miners and local sellers. Our family also maintained a purchasing office there.
Although a merchant rather than a cutter by profession, he understood a gemstone's journey from rough stone to finished gem. His judgement came from years of close observation, practical experience and care.
Those who knew him remember more than his eye for gemstones. They remember his honesty, hospitality, fairness and the respect he showed others. These are the values we strive to carry forward.

Growing Up With Gemstones
A Heritage We Lived, Not Just Inherited.
Growing up in China Fort, we listened to our grandfather and uncles discussing stones, watched them work and gradually became part of the everyday rhythm of the family trade.
At times, we sat beside visiting buyers, weighed gemstones or helped with a transaction. What began as childhood curiosity became an education in careful judgement, personal relationships and the responsibility that comes with trust.
These experiences shaped not only what we know about gemstones, but how we believe people should be treated.

Inspired by the generations before us, we established Serene Gems (Pvt) Ltd as our own independent business. We bring together the experience gained within our family, the relationships we have built and a personal approach to every gemstone enquiry.
Our name is new in a story that began long before us. The principles remain familiar: knowledge, integrity, hospitality and lasting trust.
